First a disclaimer:
This guide probably doesn't apply to around 99% of you with bricked PSPs.
Rule of thumb: If you see a green light with nothing on the screen, its too late. This guide can't help you :-(

This guide may only be used if you have not turned off your PSP after the bricking operation.
Also, this is based off theory and is not guaranteed to work.

Only follow this guide if you have strong belief that you have bricked your PSP. None of the instructions posted here have been tested.

Remember, you can't kill something thats already dead. The thing is to determine whether its dead or not because you can certainly kill something thats alive.

If you think you have bricked your PSP, DO NOT TURN YOUR PSP OFF.
Operations that brick your PSP include:
  • Flashing Custom Themes
  • Flashing Custom Firmware
  • Anything with the word "flash" in it that does not say "Safe for TA088v3"

Before you brick your TA088v3/TA090v2 (Flash0 backup):
You will need:
*=Required
  • A USB cable*
  • 5.03 Firmware*
  • CFW Enabler*
  • ChickHEN R2*

1. Load ChickHEN and CFW Enabler. I'm not going to go into details. Read the READMEs for information.
2. Press SELECT and change USB Mode to flash0
3. Connect to the computer.
4. Copy EVERYTHING off the drive that comes up. Do not delete, modify or do anything to the backup.
5. Safely remove the drive.
6. Press SELECT and change USB Mode back to MemoryStick.
Done! You should now be protected in case of a brick (as long as you don't turn off your PSP after the brick).

If you suspect that you have bricked your TA088v3/TA090v2:

You will need:
*=Required
  • A USB cable*
  • CFW Enabler*
  • A PSP charger*
  • A MemoryStick

1. Do not turn off your PSP at any cost. If you turn off your PSP, all hope is gone.
2. Plug in the charger even if your battery is full. Do not run any homebrew or do anything that will potentially crash the PSP.
Now, you have four options:
  • Install a later version of OFW - Will definitely unbrick but will lose access to ChickHEN (which means no homebrew) - Not reconmended - Go to step A
  • Restore flash0 from backup (if you made one) - Untested but theoretically should work - Recommended. Go to step B
  • Use version.txt and reinstall 5.03OFW - Untested but theoretically should work. - You can try. Go to step C
  • Use psardumper to extract 5.03 modules for your PSP model and copy it to flash0. - Untested - Only an idea, beyond scope of this tutorial.

A. i) If you are in ChickHEN, use network update.
ii) If you are in CFWe, download the update eboot and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE and run it.
Please note that you will not be able to use homebrew after this until an exploit for that firmware has been found.

B. i) Assuming you are ChickHEN, run the CFW Enabler launcher. If you are already in CFWe skip this step.
ii) Press SELECT and change USB Mode to flash0
iii) Connect to computer.
iv) Copy everything from you backup to flash0. Press yes to allow replacing of files.
v) Reboot PSP and hope for the best.

C. i) Assuming you are ChickHEN, run the CFW Enabler launcher. If you are already in CFWe skip this step.
ii) Open the CFWe launcher and Go to Settings -> version.txt -> Change Version to 5.02
iii) Exit the program.
iv) Download the 5.03OFW EBOOT and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE
v) Run the eboot in CFWe.
(Method unconfirmed but theoretically seems to be able to work. Please post results)

Good luck.
